The new edition of the SOLO
Advanced Music Training Course, an extraordinary opportunity for talented young
musicians realized with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
The Advanced Training Course for solo instrumentalists is aimed at the following classes
of instruments
- Violin
- Cello
- Transverse Flute
- Oboe
- Clarinet
The training includes individual lessons given by internationally renowned teachers – concert artists:
- Oleksandr Semchuk for the violin class – internationally renowned violinist with concerts that have seen him perform successfully all over the world
- Jing Zhao for the cello class – guest professor at the Beijing Conservatory and the College of Music in Tokyo and internationally acclaimed soloist
- Andrea Griminelli for the flute class – flutist, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for his sensitive interpretations and astonishing technique, was listed by the New York Times as one of the ‘eight emerging artists of the 1990s’
- Francesco Di Rosa for the oboe class – Principal Oboe of the Orchestra dell'Accademia nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Cecilia.
- Alessandro Carbonare for the clarinet class -First Clarinet of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since 2003.
The course will consist of 8 frontal lessons, plus an annual Masterclass with prestigious
European teachers and 10 hours of theoretical online lessons on musical aesthetics.
In addition to the teachers indicated above, every year SOLO will host in-depth
masterclasses, which will include important international musicians with extensive CVs
and experience in the orchestral and soloist fields.
The Masterclasses will be open to students from all Conservatories in the Region who can
participate as auditors.
The Advanced Training Course provides a total of 80 hours of training each year for each
student, divided as follows:
- Face-to-face lessons for each instrument class, in which students will actively participate in the lesson, bringing pieces from the repertoire, and passively, listening to the lessons of the other participants
- Online master classes focusing on the exegesis of the pieces and the historical- interpretive context of the main pieces. Each master class will be presented in a specific way for each of the instrument classes present, with references to dedicated and relevant pieces and repertoires
- Masterclasses with internationally renowned concert artists, where students will have the opportunity to play together with leading professionals, accompanied by pianists, and attend the other lessons as auditors.
The course has a maximum of 50 students in total.
Candidates who hold a diploma from music conservatories or other schools and who are
under 35 years of age on the date of the examination may take part in the course.
The equivalence of the qualifications submitted by candidates will be subject to the
unquestionable judgement of the Examination Board.
Candidates enrolled at the G.B. Martini Conservatoire of Bologna will be given a
preferential track for admission to the course, at the unquestionable judgement of the
teacher trainers.
Applications for admission to the course must be submitted using the appropriate on-line
form by the deadlines indicated → when?
Subsequently, the admission tests to the course will be held, during which the candidates
will have to present approximately 15 minutes of music with a repertoire varying in style
and epoch extracted from various solo pieces, which will be communicated in advance to
those interested by the examination board.
A pianist will be made available to the candidates for the admission test. Candidates who wish to make use of their own trusted pianist will inform the Commission
in advance.
The Course is the result of a partnership between three important regional institutions: the
University of Bologna-Department of Arts, the Bologna Philharmonic Academy Foundation
and the Carlo and Guglielmo Andreoli School of Music Foundation of Mirandola (MO). The
University is in charge of scientific coordination and appoints university lecturers for master
classes; the Academy provides the premises for holding the classes (starting with the
prestigious Sala Mozart), pianos and its precious historical archive; the Andreoli School of
Music Foundation guarantees technical and organizational assistance.
COURSE COST
The cost of the course is 1,000 (one thousand) euros per year, to be paid after the successful completion of the admission test following the issue of the invoice.
ENROLLMENTS
Applications for admission to the Course must be submitted on-line in the form at the bottom of this page.. Enrolment will be finalised after the positive outcome of the auditions, which will take place with the following program:- Violin – 21 October (access to the academy from 10.15 a.m.) CLOSED
- Cello – 20 November (access to the academy from 10.15 a.m.) CLOSED
- FLUTE – 29 November (access to the academy from 10.15 a.m.) CLOSED
- Oboe – 22 November (access to the academy from 10.15 a.m.)
- Clarinet – 24 October (access to the academy from 10.15 a.m.) CLOSED
Priority in the selection will be given to graduates. Non-graduates will be admitted in the
event of vacancies. Priority will also be given to students enrolled at the Conservatorio
G.B. Martini di Bologna and those resident in Emilia-Romagna, at the unquestionable
discretion of the teachers.
The admission tests will then take place, during which the candidate must present 15
minutes of music with the following repertoire:
- Violin: 2 pieces from the concert repertoire of free choice, from different periods and styles, one for solo violin and one for accompanied violin
- Cellothe first movement of a concerto of your choice; a movement from a Bach Suite of your choice; a movement from another work, of contrasting style and character to the previous pieces (choices including pieces from the Wiener Klassik and/or 20th and 21st century repertoire are particularly appreciated).
- Flute: Mozart concerto of your choice K.313 or K.314 and a piece for solo flute of your choice
- Oboe:2 pieces of your choice from a different period, 1 for solo oboe and the other accompanied by the piano preferably first and second movements of Mozart KV314.
- ClarinetPremiere Rapsodie by C. Debussy and a piece of your choice for solo clarinet
Auditions and lessons will take place at the seat of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna Fondazione, in via Guerrazzi, 13.
It will also be possible, for those unable to attend in person, to submit their application via video – using a YouTube link – by 24:00 on the day before the audition, attaching the link in the form at the bottom of the page. Late submissions will not be accepted.
The result of the selections, at the unquestionable judgement of the teachers, will be communicated by e-mail, at the end of the selections, on the day of the audition.

For those admitted to the course, the first lessons will be held:
